Alfredo Cramerotti

Alfredo Cramerotti (1967) is a writer, editor, curator and artist based in the UK. His cultural practice explores the relationship between reality and representation across a variety of media and collaborations such as TV, radio, publishing, media festivals, writing and exhibition curating. He holds an MA in Art in Context (University of the Arts Berlin), was a participant in the Critical Studies Program (Lund University/Malmö Art Academy) and Fellow Art Theory and Criticism (Künstlerhaus Büchsenhausen Innsbruck). Among his recent research and curatorial activity: co-curator, Manifesta 8 European biennial of contemporary art (2010-2011); senior curator, QUAD Derby (2008-present), co-curator, CPS Chamber of Public Secrets (2004-present) and co-director, AGM Culture roaming curatorial agency (2003-present). Alfredo is Editor of the Critical Photography book series and recent publications include the book Aesthetic Journalism: How to Inform without Informing (2009).

His current research explores the idea of Expanded Photography. Taking onboard the key concept that photography is 'dissolving into the magma of images' (Foncuberta), that, in other words, it is loosing its historical and medium-specificity and expanding its scope to many other functions, Cramerotti identifies ‘the photographical’ as the paradigm through which reconsider and recontextualize photography. 'The photographical' is definable as the body of relations, interests and scopes (voluntarily or coercive) that constitute ourselves both as individuals and communities via a visual alphabet and a visual database; a language neither written nor verbal, but visual.
