Aims & Scope

The East Asian Journal of Popular Culture is the leading academic peer-reviewed journal for scholars, teachers and students from around the world interested in the popular culture of East Asia.  In recent decades, East Asian popular culture has attracted increasing attention within academia and beyond. Peer Review Policy

All articles undergo initial editorial screening either by the journal's Editorial Team and/or incumbent Guest Editors. Articles then undergo a rigorous, anonymous, external peer review by two referees, following the guidance in Intellect's 'Peer review instructions'. Based on this feedback, the Editors will communicate a decision and revision suggestions to authors. To appeal an editorial decision, please contact the main Editor who will consider your case.

Guest Issue Review Policy

The review process for guest issues is fundamentally the same as for general issues of the journal. Guest editor(s) are appointed for or may solicit the journal issue, and submit a proposal and abstracts. After approval of the proposal and abstracts by the EAJPC editors’ team, guest editor(s) are required to submit the list with names and contact details of 2 to 3 external reviewers for each article. The EAJPC editors’ team reviews the qualifications of each of the reviewers, reserves the right to accept the reviewer list, and if necessary nominates reviewers from the EAJPC in-house database mailing list. If the guest editor(s) is also a paper submitter, EAJPC supervises the blind peer review process. The EAJPC editors’ team provide guidance for guest editors as to the suitability of submitted articles, reviewer reports and response letter. The finalised manuscript is determined by the guest editor(s) and the EAJPC editors’ team. The individual reviewer reports per article are to be submitted at the same time when the guest editor(s) submits the completed manuscript for Intellect. The EAJPC editor’s team retain the right of final decision over the contents of the issue and the interpretation of the reviewer reports. Guest editor(s) are provided with a detailed timeline and guidelines for publication quality.

Ethical Guidelines

The journal follows the principles set out by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Read our Ethical Guidelines for more on the journal's standards.

General Call for Papers

We are delighted to announce the development of the East Asian Journal of Popular Culture and to issue a general call for papers. In the last few decades there has been a huge rise in the interest in East Asian popular culture. The East Asian Journal of Popular Culture will be engaging directly with that trend. From film to music; art to translation and fashion to tourism, this journal will offer a forum where multidisciplinary work can come together in new and exciting ways.

The East Asian Journal of Popular Culture encourages articles that are both localized (towards a specific popular culture tend, figure or industry) as well as articles that are more global in their outlook (forging links between East Asian popular culture and wider global issues). We look for papers that engage with current as well as emerging issues in popular culture in East Asia, cosplay culture, food culture, kawaii, manga and anime, martial arts, politics, and the complex relationships between nationalism and popular culture. We are interested in multidisciplinary papers (that all come under the sport and leisure, digital media, history, media, fashion, music, material culture and literature. Papers and works on translation studies, as well as cultural history and anthropology will be also welcomed.

We are keen to involve scholars from all over the world and we actively search for reviews of non-English language publications on all aspects of East Asian popular culture and reviews of, and engagement with, cultural events such as photography, theatre and film festivals. If you are interested in acting as a reviewer or are interested in proposing a book to be reviewed please contact the reviews editor.

Topics that could be examined include:
· Cultural Translation in East Asia
· K-Pop
· Shanzhai culture
· Fandom in East asia
· Consumerism in East Asia
· Spectacle and Performance
· Fashion
· Cosplay culture
· Anime in East Asia
· Internet/mobile technologies/virtual border crossings
· Tourism and the tourist imaginary
· Baseball Culture in East Asia
· Food Culture
· Manga
· Communication networks in East Asia
· Martial Arts Culture
· East Asian Cinema systems and cultural interaction

Articles need to be 6000–8500 words in length and conform to the Intellect Style Guide (see here) and EAJPC Notes for Contributors (see top of this page).

All articles submitted should be original work and must not be under consideration by other publications. The journal follows Intellect's Ethical Guidelines.

If you would like to submit a paper or contact us about a proposed special edition please email: eajpopculture@gmail.com or one of the editors for further advice.

Journal contributors will receive a free PDF copy of their final work upon publication. Print copies of the journal may also be purchased by contributors at half price.
