Aims & Scope

The Journal of Design, Business & Society is a cross-disciplinary peer-reviewed scholarly journal that publishes high-quality academic papers examining design from a variety of multi-disciplinary, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspectives. Our mission is to promote innovative approaches to research in design, and we are interested in studies that examine design in all its multifaceted forms and from a range of platforms – whether they are social, environmental, commercial or educational in nature. With the above in mind, we are interested in contributions that expand on design practice and/or the application of design concepts from the wider disciplinary spectrum, including business, marketing, management, health, and the social and environmental sciences.

Peer Review Policy

All articles undergo initial editorial screening either by the journal's Editorial Team and/or incumbent Guest Editors. Articles then undergo a rigorous anonymous peer review by two referees, following the guidance in Intellect's 'Peer review instructions'. Based on this feedback, the Editors will communicate a decision and revision suggestions to authors. To appeal an editorial decision, please contact the main Editor who will consider your case.

General Call for Papers

We welcome contributions that explore design theories, practices and research methodologies of all types which critically analyse the impact, value and implementation of design in real-world settings. We specifically encourage manuscripts that explore any of the following themes whilst offering innovative solutions to current problems with a view to business, social or strategic impact. Research topics could include, but are not limited to:

  • Design management and leadership
  • Applied design methodology and research
  • Designed artefacts, services or systems
  • Designed experiences and user-centred design
  • Product or service innovations
  • Strategic design
  • Design and planetary futures
  • Design for social innovation
  • Design, economy and politics
  • Design and data visualisation
  • Emergent technologies
  • Critical thinking in, and for, design
  • Knowledge, representation and power in design
  • Design futures

We are specifically looking for contributions of the following:

Research Articles: 6,000–8,000 words, offering an original contribution to design research.

Viewpoints: 2,000–4,000 words, offering a critical reflection on an immediate contemporary issue.

Visualisations: a double-page spread accompanied by an explanatory text of 500–100 words contextualising the work.

Interviews: 1,500–2,000 words, offering the opportunity to various active members of our society (whether situated within or outside academia, e.g. design leaders, design practitioners) to express their opinion on specific contemporary issues.

Book Reviews: 500–1,000 words (summary reviews of one book) or 1500–3000 words (critical reviews of one or two books)

Reading Lists: Approximately 500 words listing current inspirational texts on design practice and research (5 titles maximum, each one accompanied by a 100–word rationale).
