Abstract
What is the position of auteur theory and the state of auteur studies in the study of Chinese cinemas? This article aims to stimulate discussion and debate on this question by arguing that the auteur should be treated as a critical category that demands an interrogation of its institutionalization within academic disciplines and strategies of auteurship construction adopted by film-makers. To illustrate how these issues might be critically engaged, the article examines the ways in which Tsai Ming-liang's film-making practices, specifically intratextuality, intertextuality and paratextuality, provide fertile ground for rethinking auteur theory in the study of Chinese cinemas and beyond.
