Fackson Banda

Until May 2010, Professor Fackson Banda was the SAB LTD-UNESCO Chair of Media and Democracy in the School of Journalism and Media Studies at Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa. Winner of the prestigious Media Institute for Southern Africa (MISA) 2008 Press Freedom Award and columnist on Zambia’s The Post newspaper, Professor Banda also worked as Executive Director of Panos Southern Africa in Lusaka, Zambia. He is presently a Programme Specialist responsible for media and citizen participation at UNESCO, Paris, France. His research interests include: media, African political thought and postcolonial theory; political economy of communication; media, democracy and development; community communication; and China and African media.
