Judith Okely

Judith Okely, emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology, Hull University, Research Associate ISCA Oxford, studied at the Sorbonne, Oxford and Cambridge. She has held positions at Durham, Essex and Edinburgh Universities. She has engaged with Gypsies, Travellers, Roma and government policies towards nomads. At Oxford she was partner to the Marie Curie project 'Multi-Disciplinary and Cross-National Approaches to Romany Studies: A Model for Europe' 2007/10. Her publications include: The Traveller Gypsies (1983), Simone de Beauvoir: a re-reading (1986), Anthropology and Autobiography (1993), Own or Other Culture (1996), 'Visualism and Landscape', Ethnos (2001), Identity and Networks (2007), Knowing how to Know (2008)  and in press Anthropological Practice: fieldwork and the ethnographic method (2011).
