Aims & Scope

Radio Journal publishes critical analyses of radio and sound media across a variety of platforms, from broadcast to podcast and all in between. Articles focus on both historical and contemporary issues in sound-based journalism and media studies. We look for work that explores the production, circulation and reception of radio and creative soundwork, and encourage a wide range of international and interdisciplinary perspectives. Radio Journal welcomes scholarship from early career researchers as well as internationally renowned scholars. It also publishes reviews of recent publications in the field of radio and sound studies.

Radio Journal is edited from the US and Australia and has an international scope. It is a refereed publication; all research articles undergo rigorous double-blind peer review. The editors will review other contributions. The process normally takes three months to complete.

Submissions

To submit an article, please follow the 'Submit' button on the left of this page or: https://submission.pubkit.co/submissions/publisher/29/journal/427/login. Please include a separate cover page with: article title; author's name and affiliation; brief abstract (150 words); keywords (5–6); author's biography (150 words); author's institutional postal and email address. No identifying information should appear on any other pages of the article, to aid in the blind review process.

Peer Review Policy

All articles undergo initial editorial screening either by the journal's Editorial Team and/or incumbent Guest Editors. Articles then undergo a rigorous anonymous peer review by two referees, following the guidance in Intellect's 'Peer review instructions'. Based on this feedback, the Editors will communicate a decision and revision suggestions to authors. To appeal an editorial decision, please contact the main Editor who will consider your case.

General Call for Papers

Radio Journal publishes critical analyses of radio and sound media across a variety of platforms, from broadcast to podcast and all in between. We define ‘radio' broadly to include not only traditional broadcasting, but any form of creative or factual expression that takes place primarily through sound.

We look for articles that explore the production, circulation and reception of radio and creative soundwork, and encourage a wide range of international and interdisciplinary perspectives on both historical and contemporary issues in sound-based journalism and media studies. The Radio Journal welcomes scholarship from early career researchers as well as internationally renowned scholars.

Radio Journal is an English-language journal with a strong international editorial board. It is a refereed publication; all research articles undergo rigorous double-blind peer review. The editors will review other contributions. The process normally takes three months to complete, from submission to decision.

Scholars around the world are invited to submit original articles of 6–8,000 words, following Intellect style guidelines. Radio Journal also publishes book reviews, conference reports, viewpoint essays on current debates, translations, and news of digital and archival sources for research.

Subjects the journal covers include:

  • The history of sound media, from radio to the MP3
  • Radio drama, documentary, features, news, and discussion
  • Music and/on radio
  • Digital sound forms, such as podcasts, streaming audio, audiobooks, and apps
  • Community, local, regional, national, and international broadcasting
  • Theories and methods of radio and radio studies
  • Sound theory and aesthetics
  • Radio and sound interfaces, services, and technologies
  • Listening as a cultural practice
  • Sound audiences and fan practices
  • Radio and soundwork criticism
  • Broadcasting institutions, industries, policies, and professional practices
  • Policy and rights issues affecting radio and sound media
  • Gender, race, class, sexuality and sound
  • Archival issues and audio preservation
  • Radio and sound studies pedagogy
