New Cinemas: Journal of Contemporary Film (Journal)

ISSN 14742756 , ONLINE ISSN 20400578

New Cinemas provides a peer-reviewed platform for scholarship that broadens and elaborates our knowledge of late-twentieth century and contemporary cinematic theory and practice. Welcoming approaches that do not take existing conceptual paradigms and canons as given, it anticipates submissions that refresh our understanding of established bodies of work as well as those which tackle practices still in the process of development.

Aims & Scope

New Cinemas publishes original research on cinema from around the world, including Argentina, South Africa, Iran, Germany and Korea, and about a variety of practices, not only the feature film format. We particularly welcome submissions from those close to completing their PhD, Early Career Researchers and practitioners, especially from outside 'Western' spaces, as well as work on film beyond the text (such as festivals, technology and marketing). We also seek to publish research and cutting-edge thought in shorter formats than the traditional academic article.

All articles submitted should be original work and must not be under consideration by other publications.

Journal contributors will receive a free PDF copy of their final work upon publication. Print copies of the journal may also be purchased by contributors at half price.

Peer Review Policy

All articles undergo initial editorial screening either by the journal's Editorial Team and/or incumbent Guest Editors. Articles then undergo a rigorous anonymous peer review by two referees, following the guidance in Intellect's 'Peer review instructions'. Based on this feedback, the Editors will communicate a decision and revision suggestions to authors. To appeal an editorial decision, please contact the main Editor who will consider your case.

Call for Peer Reviewers

New Cinemas is seeking scholars and practitioners to act as peer reviewers. A vital part of academic publishing, peer review enriches the discipline and improves the work of authors and reviewers alike. We encourage reviewers from diverse backgrounds and at different stages of their career to join the peer review pool. We are particularly interested in hearing from researchers in Asian cinemas, film theory and philosophy, and genres such as horror and sci-fi.

To sign up for future peer reviews, please send details of your areas of academic expertise to journal editors Stuart Green (s.n.s.j.green@leeds.ac.uk), Chris Homewood (c.homewood@leeds.ac.uk) and Priyanka Singh (p.verma@leeds.ac.uk).

Ethical Guidelines

The journal follows the principles set out by the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Read our Ethical Guidelines for more on the journal's standards.
