The Journal of Music, Technology and Education explores the issues concerning the use of technology in music education at all levels and across genres such as composition, musicology, performance and music production. It is the only journal specifically dedicated to the educational aspects of music technology and the technological aspects of music. Peer-reviewed, with an international editorial board, JMTE aims to draw its contributions from a broad community of educators, researchers and practitioners who are working closely with new technologies in the fields of music education and music technology education.

Aims & Scope

The Journal of Music, Technology and Education (JMTE) is published in partnership with the Association for Technology in Music Instruction. JMTE explores the issues concerning the use of technology in music education. It examines pedagogy at all levels and across genres such as composition, musicology, performance and music production. It is the only journal specifically dedicated to the educational aspects of music technology and the technological aspects of music. Double-blind peer-reviewed and with an international editorial board, JMTE aims to draw its contributions from a broad community of educators, researchers and practitioners who are working closely with new technologies in the fields of music education and music technology education.

Peer Review Policy

All articles undergo initial editorial screening either by the journal's Editorial Team and/or incumbent Guest Editors. Articles then undergo a rigorous anonymous peer review by two referees, following the guidance in Intellect's 'Peer review instructions'. Based on this feedback, the Editors will communicate a decision and revision suggestions to authors. To appeal an editorial decision, please contact the main Editor who will consider your case.

General Call for Papers information

The editorial team are always open to receiving submissions – there are no specific cut-off dates. We aim to have a turn-around time from submission to response from the editor following peer-review within approximately eight weeks. Articles should not normally exceed 6,000 words in length, should include full references, bibliography and keywords, and should also include an abstract of no more than 150 words. Illustrated articles are welcome. Short reports may be submitted on related issues, as well as conference reports, book and pedagogically-contextualized software/hardware reviews.

We invite contributions in any aspect of the field, such as:

  • computer-mediated music composition in education;
  • music performance technologies;
  • audiation and aural awareness training systems;
  • music, technology, education and industrial practice;
  • computational musicology in further and higher education;
  • musical creativity and technology;
  • pedagogical aspects of electroacoustic composition;
  • classroom engagement with new technologies;
  • assessing student music technology practice.
