Article Submissions

As well as university-based researchers, Punk & Post-Punk invites submissions from independent scholars and anyone with a serious, critical view of the field. We welcome articles exploring punk’s impact on the wider culture beyond music, including the arts, ethnography, sociology, politics, fashion, history, musicology and pedagogy. We particularly encourage articles discussing regional and international differentiation and contemporary developments in punk and post-punk scenes and subcultures. Articles should be between 6,000 and 8,000 words in length. Reviews can be between 1,000 and 2,000 words and should be of newly (or very recently) published books or punk/post-punk-related publications and events (e.g. exhibitions, albums, gigs and festivals).

Topics for articles may include (but are not limited to):

  • global impact and inclusion;
  • punk and post-punk history/histories;
  • etymology and language;
  • genre definition and development;
  • antecedents and influences;
  • practices of production, distribution and consumption/reception;
  • art and design strategies;
  • fashion, aesthetics and style;
  • musicology;
  • politics, community, gender, sexuality, class and race issues;
  • transgression and subcultural opposition;
  • associated cultural industries;
  • concepts of independence and DIY cultures;
  • debates around authenticity;
  • archival practices;
  • film studies;
  • publishing, journalism and fanzine cultures.

Potential contributors should send a 200-word abstract to Editor Russ Bestley.
