Aims & Scope

Journal of Popular Television is an international, double-blind peer-reviewed journal designed to promote and encourage scholarship on all aspects of popular television, whether fictional or non-fictional, from docudramas and sports to news and comedy. The journal is rooted in the belief that popular television continues to play a major cultural, political and social role, and thus seeks interdisciplinary contributions that contextualize programmes, genres, personalities and phenomena. The journal seeks to be equally responsive to contemporary developments in television production and within television criticism and theory, and to historical approaches and re-evaluation of canonical and non-canonical texts.

General Call for Papers

All articles submitted should be original work and must not be under consideration by other publications.

This international, peer-reviewed journal invites articles on all aspects of popular television, both fictional and non-fictional, from docudramas and sports to news and cultural programming. Published three times a year, the journal is rooted in the belief that popular television continues to play a major cultural, political and social role, and thus seeks contributions that contextualize programmes, genres and phenomena. Analysis of national television cultures and style are welcomed, but the editors are particularly interested in interdisciplinary, empirical and comparative approaches to shows and developments across national boundaries. The journal seeks to be equally responsive to contemporary developments in television production and contemporary currents within television criticism and theory, and to historical approaches and re-evaluation of canonical and non-canonical texts.

Possible topics of interest might include: studies of individual programmes, format trading, comparisons of different broadcast policies, quality television, reality television, television personalities and stars, documentaries, sport, children's television and comedy.

Articles of between 6000 and 8000 words in length (excluding references) are invited, and should use the Intellect Books Style Guide. Articles and queries can be submitted directly to the principal editor. Articles can also be submitted via the Intellect website.

The journal will published themed issues and prospective guest editors should approach the editor with a proposal. Prospective book reviewers should also approach the editor directly.

Journal contributors will receive a free PDF copy of their final work upon publication. Print copies of the journal may also be purchased by contributors at half price.
