General Call for Papers

In addition to the staple fare of the journal (scholarly articles and book reviews) we want to broaden the focus of the journal to include wide-ranging reviews of American cinema, music, art and other cultural forms. We also want to include spaces for comment and reply so that developments in American culture can be highlighted and discussed as they are happening rather than retrospectively.

Unsurprisingly our aim is academic excellence (and all our articles are refereed), but what we also seek is relevance and readership. We want articles that are credible in terms of the research assessment exercise but we also want to build a journal that undergraduates, postgraduates and academics from a range of disciplines find truly useful and interesting.

In detail our aims might be defined as:

Through the publication of long articles (circa 6,000-8,000 words), to facilitate the academic study of all aspects of American culture, both modern and historical, particularly in newer fields of academic enquiry such as film and new media. Articles may approach their particular subject matter from one discipline or from several. Through the publication of shorter comments and responses, to foster academic debate about on-going developments in modern American culture. Through the publication of reviews, to review current scholarship within the broad field of American culture, both modern and historical.

Our principles are:

To paraphrase Jefferson's words 'all men [and women] are created equal' and that academic excellence does not reside solely within the ranks of established scholars. We are willing to consider articles from all sections within the academic community, and from beyond it. To be neither pro-American or anti-American in our editorial direction. To value the European perspective on American culture. European culture has fostered the development of American culture, which in turn has fostered the development of a global culture in which Europe is enmeshed.

Special Issue Call for Papers

Currently, there are no special issue Calls for Papers for this journal.

Teaching American Culture Series

The European Journal of American Culture is currently soliciting short articles for a new series about ‘Teaching American Culture’. We want to publish short pieces – around 1 to 3,000 words – that engage with some aspect of teaching American culture in its broadest sense. As such, we are looking for succinct writing that explores classroom ideas, practice, and theory. The pieces should focus on American culture such as: literary texts and broader print culture; theatre, film and television; music; video games; visual art, etc. If you are interested in contributing something not on this list, get in touch.

These pieces might take the form of:

  • An overview of a teaching activity
  • An assessment outline
  • A syllabus innovation
  • A learning and teaching strategy
  • An engagement with pedagogic theory in a particular context
  • A vignette about a specific teaching moment
  • A ‘how-to’ approach to teaching specific texts
  • Engagement with cultural texts that are seen to be ‘difficult’, ‘confusing’, or ‘boring’
  • A reflective account of your practice
  • A dialogue between multiple teachers, or with students
  • A speculative essay about the future of our field(s)
  • And much more

Each article should be formatted as per the journal’s style sheet, and should include keywords, a short abstract, and contact information.

You should send your piece to the journal via the submission link, but you can get in touch with Dr Chris Lloyd, Co-Editor of the journal, to discuss in more detail.
