The quiz is taken from our recent publication the Directory of World Cinema: American Independent and focuses on American independent cinema. For a limited time the Directory is also available as a free download online.

As an academic publisher of subjects related to creative media, Intellect has established a strong reputation in the field of cinema studies through its book and journal programmes. We are excited about this project, which will bring a new dimension to the academic study of film – the Directory of World Cinema.

The project consists of three components:

    * A pre-print web-based database, which will facilitate content collection and provide free access to the content.
    * A series of printed volumes for each world region, of about 300 pages per volume. In each series, a new volume with original content will be published every two years.
    * Post-publication online PDFs of the published material, sold to libraries.

The Directory of World Cinema: American Independent chronicles the rise of the independent sector as an outlet for directors who challenge the status quo, yet still produce accessible feature films that find wide audiences and enjoy considerable box office appeal, without sacrificing critical legitimacy. Key directors are interviewed and profiled, and a sizeable selection of films are referenced and reviewed. More than a dozen sub-genres - including African American cinema, queer cinema, documentary, familial dysfunction and exploitation - are individually considered, with an emphasis on their ability to exemplify and engage with tensions inherent in American society. Copious illustrations and a range of research resources round out the volume, making this a truly comprehensive guide.

The Directory of World Cinema: American Independent is the second volume in the series, other volumes include Directory of World Cinema: Japan, Directory of World Cinema: Russia and Directory of World Cinema: Australia and New Zealand. Information about each volume is available on our website: www.intellectbooks.co.uk.
