JAWS: Journal of Arts Writing by Students is the only academic arts journal run by and dedicated to the work of MA and Ph.D. students. JAWS was conceived as an opportunity for students to gain experience of the publishing and peer-review process, and champions a developmental role within this. No theme or topic is set for each issue, as this emerges from the submissions received.

Capturing contemporary themes and trends across the arts, JAWS publishes historical and theoretical articles alongside practice-based work; promoting the autodidactic attitude and inherent curiosity that is required for post graduate, career or personal research development with or without practice. The journal invites submissions from across all disciplines of art and design and accepts submissions from external disciplines where the focus is upon visual culture. The content reflects the journal's role as a space that allows for a variety of discussion, and in which research can be made accessible.

JAWS employs a double blind peer-review process, and maintains an international network of student peer reviewers and editors. A unique and complimentary set of guidance is used for unconventional submissions (of practice i.e. practice-based, practice as research), and this guidance evolves each issue through the peer review and editing process. For full submission guidelines, and more detailed information about the peer review process and guidance used, please see the JAWS website.
