Event-Site: Presentation and Screenings on The Place of Artists’ Cinema

Picture This, 40 Sydney Row, Bristol
Tuesday March 16, 2010 at 6.30pm

Event-Site is a one-night screening programme developed in collaboration with Picture This. It will include works by Michelle Deignan, desperate optimists (Joe Lawlor and Christine Molloy), Laura Horelli, Isaac Julien, Bea McMahon and Alexandra Navratil, and a talk by Maeve Connolly based on her new book, The Place of Artists’ Cinema: Space, Site and Screen (Bristol: Intellect, 2009). The screenings will be followed by a launch of the book.

Artists’ film and video has been marked by a concern with context and site for several decades. Since the 1990s, it has been possible to identify both an increased emphasis on the moving image in the spaces and sites of contemporary art and a new focus on the social and architectural history of cinema. The Place of Artists’ Cinema: Space, Site and Screen critically examines the relationship between cinema, site and place within contemporary art, exploring the production and exhibition of artists’ film and video within a range of contexts, from museums and galleries to public art projects, biennial exhibitions and art fairs. The book features in-depth readings of twenty-four recent works, including projected multi-screen narratives, site-specific projects, feature-length films and sculptural installations evoking the architecture of the movie theatre.

This event is supported by Culture Ireland.
